Move-in

What does it really cost to move into a Berlin flat?

A monthly rent can fit your budget while the first month still does not.

Build a first-month budget

Start with the first warm-rent payment and the deposit. Then add moving, furniture, household basics, internet setup, and any temporary accommodation you need before move-in. A furnished home can reduce some upfront purchases, but may have a different monthly price.

Understand the deposit

For a standard residential tenancy, the deposit is generally limited to three months of cold rent, and tenants can generally pay it in three instalments. The exact agreement and any special arrangement matter, so confirm the terms in writing.

Read tenant guidance on deposits and apartment search.

Use reported deposits as planning context

GermanyRent shows community-reported deposits alongside monthly rent. Use them to understand the range reported for comparable homes, not as a substitute for reviewing a specific contract. A lower monthly rent can still have a substantial move-in cost.
